A team at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture) and others announced on the 18th that they had developed the world's blackest "supreme dark sheet" as a touchable material that absorbs more than 99.98% of visible light. Black materials with high light absorption rate are made of carbon nanotubes, but they are so fragile that they break when touched, making them difficult to put into practical use. In the future, we aim to put it to practical use in camera lenses that suppress light reflection.

In 2019, the team developed a dark sheet that uses carbon black pigment to absorb 99.65% of visible light. It is characterized by a "light confining structure" with fine conical unevenness on the surface, and it is a mechanism in which light is attenuated as it is repeatedly reflected by the unevenness. However, although "glare" due to reflection can be suppressed, there is a drawback that "dullness" remains due to light scattering and escape.

This time, AIST tested various materials to replace the carbon black pigment. By using "cashew oil black resin," which has smaller particles and can be used as a substitute for lacquer, the dullness was also eliminated, and more than 99.98% of visible light was absorbed, surpassing the 2019 level. When I hit the laser pointer, I could see the light on the 2019 seat, but it almost disappeared on the seat this time.

At a press conference, Kuniyoshi Amemiya, head of the Applied Optical Measurement Research Group at AIST, said, "We've done everything we can to reduce the reflectance." The results were published in the US scientific journal Science Advances. (Japanese original by Mayumi Shinoda, City News Department)
